In a remarkably swift policy reversal, Kickstarter has withdrawn its recently introduced detailed guidelines for Mature Content. The platform is reverting to its earlier, less restrictive rules, which continue to allow projects with adult-oriented content — provided they do not constitute pornography or illegal material.
On May 19, 2026, Sean Leow, Chief Operating Officer of Kickstarter, published a blog post titled “An Apology: Rethinking Our Mature Content Guidelines.” In it, the company openly admits that the new guidelines released just one week earlier did not achieve the intended outcome.
“Last week, we released a set of updates to our rules around mature content. It was our first time publishing a set of detailed, specific guidelines for adult-oriented content on Kickstarter. And honestly? We botched it.”
Leow explains that the new rules were primarily motivated by the requirements of their payment processor, Stripe. Stripe is subject to its own compliance standards, which are influenced by banks and financial institutions. In recent months, several already-approved campaigns were suspended by Stripe — a situation that can have existential consequences for creators.
The aim of the new guidelines was to create greater clarity and planning security. In practice, however, they caused uncertainty and concern that Kickstarter was distancing itself from certain forms of creative work. Leow writes:
“The decision we made wasn’t the right one, and in an attempt to create rules that could work across both Kickstarter and Stripe, we rolled out something that was too restrictive and too far removed from what we actually believe.”
Return to Previous Guidelines
As a result, Kickstarter is removing the new detailed guidelines and reverting to its former rules. These explicitly prohibit pornography and illegal content, but allow significantly more room for erotic, sensual, or adult-themed projects — such as erotic literature, NSFW art, sensual photo books, or related merchandise campaigns.
At the same time, Leow acknowledges the ongoing challenges:
“This isn’t the easiest route. It means that at any point […] Stripe can still suspend a campaign that Kickstarter has approved.”
The platform has announced it will continue to advocate for approved projects with Stripe and has published additional resources to help creators avoid problems.
Implications for the Adult Industry
For creators in the adult sector, this revision brings noticeable relief. After the initial uncertainty caused by the new guidelines, there is now greater planning security again. Nevertheless, the fundamental tension between platform policy and the stricter requirements of payment processors remains.
With this decision, Kickstarter is once again positioning itself as a platform that supports creative freedom and “boundary-pushing” work — even though its dependence on external payment service providers imposes limits. The rapid response to community feedback demonstrates that the voices of creators were heard.
For everyone working in the online erotica space, one thing remains essential: careful project presentation and familiarity with Stripe’s guidelines. This latest development, however, provides reason for optimism that Kickstarter actively wants to preserve the space for adult-oriented crowdfunding campaigns.
